How to Book Your Practical Driving Test: Step by Step

In this guide

Booking a practical driving test sounds straightforward until you’re actually at the DVSA website trying to work out what you need and when. How to book practical driving test appointments properly, the first time, avoids a surprisingly common source of frustration for learners who are otherwise ready to go.

At Cosmo School of Motoring we teach automatic driving lessons across Manchester and Salford and offer driving lessons in Salford with a DVSA approved instructor.

What You Need Before Booking

A valid provisional driving licence. Your licence number is required during the booking process, and the booking will not go through without it.

A passed theory test certificate. You cannot book a practical test until theory, including hazard perception, has been passed. Our guide on theory test hazard perception covers that stage in detail if you haven’t reached it yet.

Payment details ready. The practical test booking requires payment at the time of booking, so having a card ready avoids any last-minute scrambling partway through the process.

The Booking Process Itself

Book directly through the official GOV.UK website. This is the only legitimate route, and third-party sites charging extra for booking assistance are unnecessary and best avoided entirely.

Choose your preferred test centre. For our learners, this is usually Salford (Manchester Central), Bolton, Bury or Sale, depending on availability and which centre your lessons have been building familiarity with.

Select from the available appointment slots. Availability varies considerably by centre and time of year, and popular centres or peak periods often book up further in advance than learners expect.

Confirm and pay. Once confirmed, you’ll receive a booking reference and confirmation, which you should keep accessible rather than relying on memory alone.

Timing the Booking Properly

Book once your instructor gives an honest readiness assessment, not before. Booking too early based purely on eagerness, rather than genuine progress, often means either rushing preparation or needing to rearrange the date later, which can incur a fee if done too close to the test.

Leave enough runway between booking and the test date to keep progressing. A test booked for six to eight weeks out, rather than the very next available slot, generally gives enough time to consolidate the specific skills your instructor identifies as needing more work.

Popular test centres and certain times of year, particularly school holiday periods, tend to book up considerably faster. If a specific date matters to you, checking availability and booking early, once you’re genuinely ready, is worth doing rather than waiting and hoping a convenient slot remains open.

Common Booking Mistakes to Avoid

Booking before passing theory. This seems obvious but it’s a common point of confusion, particularly for learners who assumed theory and practical could be booked together.

Choosing a test centre based purely on convenience rather than familiarity. A test centre closer to home isn’t necessarily the better choice if your lessons have built up route familiarity around a different, slightly further centre.

Rearranging too close to the test date. Changes made within three working days of a booked test typically forfeit the fee, so any necessary changes are best made as early as possible once you know a reschedule is needed.

Not updating personal details before booking. A mismatch between your licence details and booking information can cause problems on the day, so double-checking everything matches before confirming avoids this entirely.
